Kalyn’s note:
The Queen of Hahn’s
Once upon a time I had a Hahn’s Macaw. Her name was Emerald, you can see a video of her here - she was a bundle of joy and love. People have loved my videos on her. I think this is because she’s a Macaw, but a great size and easy to take care of.
So, I sought out some baby Hahn’s Macaws again recently! I love this species and I find them to make a fabulous companion pet: they talk, are affectionate, easy to take care of in comparison to most other large birds, especially Macaws and are very personable! So, I’m setting out to be the Queen of Hahn’s Macaws on my YouTube videos 👑
1. Life In The Spirging Parrot Season:
How Baby Parrots Store Food
by Sunflower, a 4-week-old Hahn’s Macaw
It's baby parrot season, and things are hatching up around here!
All the humans are on the edge of their perches, waiting for those egg-cellent moments when the magic of life unfolds right before their eyes!
Did you know that us baby parrots have a tiny tooth at the tip of our beak? It's our secret weapon for cracking open our shell like a pro! But don't worry, a little birb-tooth fairy comes and takes it away as we grow into big, beautiful birds!
In the meantime, we’ve got Kalyn watching us around the clock! Checking to make sure she fills our crops!
What Is A Crop?
When food goes into my crop, it's like having a cozy storage pouch right by my neck! Once the delicious bites are in there, they start to soften up, making them easier to digest. When I'm hungry again, a little bit of food travels from my crop into my stomach, where all the magic happens.
First, it goes to my proventriculus, which is like a special kitchen in my belly where enzymes start breaking down the food. Then, it's off to the gizzard, a muscular second stomach, where my food is stored, soaked, and ground into smaller pieces. After that, it's time for the intestines to work it’s magic, absorbing all the nutrients from the food so I can grow big and strong! Whatever's left becomes waste and gets excreted.
It's quite the journey, but thanks to my amazing digestive system, I get all the nutrients I need to be a happy and healthy baby macaw!
2. All About Hahn’s Macaws
by Kalyn
The Mini-Macaw
Hahn's macaws originate from parts of South America, primarily Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia. These delightful birds are considered "Mini-macaws" due to their smaller size compared to other macaw species. They are, in fact, the smallest of the 19 Macaw species.
On average, they measure around 12 inches (30 cm) in length and weigh between 165 to 185 grams. Despite their smaller stature, Hahn's macaws boast a relatively long lifespan for parrots, often living up to 30 years or more in captivity with proper care and nutrition.
Being a social species, they are generally found with their flock of 5 to 15 birds in the wild.
Standout Qualities
Three of their standout qualities are their affectionate nature, intelligence, and adaptability. Hahn's macaws are known for their loving and loyal personalities, forming strong bonds with their human companions. They thrive on social interaction and enjoy spending quality time with their owners, making them excellent companions for those seeking a close avian relationship.
These mini macaws are also quite intelligent and can learn tricks and mimic human speech to some extent, adding an element of fun and engagement to their interactions. Lastly, Hahn's macaws are adaptable birds that can thrive in a variety of living environments, from small apartments to larger homes, making them a versatile choice for different lifestyles.
